When he was working for the SWRB, they tested drugs on him - mainly sedatives and mood stabilisers - to be sure there were no adverse side effects in humans.
The reason he left the SWRB was that he discovered they were doing horrific experiments on human subjects. The reason he did not immediately go to the papers is that his former employers bought his silence with Darien's life - they told him if he talked, they'd have Darien killed in prison, and they may or may not have arranged the Nasty Shower Incident to prove they could easily do it. Kevin valuing his brother's life over his own, this was the most effective blackmail possible.
