And every fight scene was executed in that uber-stylized Zach Snyder style that worked fine in 300.
I would disagree with this, but only because nothing about 300 was "fine". :)
Thanks for posting this -- I had been thinking about seeing Watchmen, but you've convinced me that it's like 300, but worse. I already hated 300. There is such a thing as too many blood droplets splattered on the screen, especially if I'm not in a video game arcade watching a prepay demo.
See, I actually *enjoyed* 300. It was violence porn, but sometimes that's what I'm in the mood for, and Frank Miller isn't exactly a writer of depth to begin with. The most plotful bits in that movie were written in for the film. But Alan Moore? Watchmen? Nononononono.
It confounds me how many (intelligent) fans of the book really like the movie.
Squid. Hitler. But I agree with the squid being ridiculous, but that's what made it awesome.
You know, for all the exposition in the film, you'd think they'd do a better tour of Mars. I mean, come on, clouds moving in a canyon 4 miles deep. I want to see it like the BBC sent a team to film it. I don't think the narrative would be impossible to convey in a format similar to flashback clip episodes in a TV series.
There was one moment in the film where I think the film adaptation was clever, where the swinging wash/bathroom door was used with the same effect as flashes of lightning on a dark night in horror films.
What's weird to my mind was how, despite the added violence, they actually cleaned up most of the characters. Rorschach is never shown digging through garbage, no one smokes (except the Comedian). Even the environments they walk through are remarkably clean. I mean, really, Oz had a more imposing prison environment than wherever Rorschach was holed up.
There was a "Boys" folder on Veidt's computer. That seemed gratuitous.
