Trollage

I went to the screening of Troll 2 at the Bloor Cinema last night. It was most awesome.

Nathan and I got there at about 9:10 to see a huge line of people waiting to get in. While we waited in line, people walking and driving past would ask people in the line just what movie it was that was generating this massive line-up (even a police officer rolled down his window to ask). Of course, the vast majority of the enquirers had never heard of Troll 2 so they probably just thought we must be an odd bunch.

After waiting in line for about 20 minutes before we actually got into the theatre. Inside, there was a merchandise stand set up with t-shirts and posters and the like (I was tempted to get one of the goblin/nilbog shirts but we didn't stop).

While waiting in the concession line, the two women in front of us saw George Hardy walking past (the guy who plays the dad in Troll 2) and asked him for a picture. As I was closest to the three of them, one of the girls gave me her camera and asked me to take their picture. Admittedly, it would have been cooler to have been the one getting my picture taken but still, kind of cool.

When we got inside we were relieved to find there were still some decent seats left in the aisle sections (fortunately, the Bloor Cinema is a pretty huge theatre) so we grabbed a couple. By this point it was probably about 9:40ish (the movie was supposed to start at 9:30 but it actually started around 10ish).

Before the movie started, some bad movies were raffled off (Troll 2, Manos, Fantasy Mission Force, etc). On the very last ticket drawn was 7107. My ticket was 7108.

I've seen Troll 2 quite a few times over the last year or so, but it's a totally different experience to watch the movie with a huge audience. It's always a funny movie, but it's so much funnier in theatre. People were participating in some bits (like the row, row, row your boat thing), laughing, hooting and applauding throughout the movie. It was great.

After the show ended, they showed the preview for Best Worst Movie and then George Hardy and Michael Stephenson came up on stage for Q & A. The Q & A probably ran about twenty to twenty-five minutes and while most of the questions were fairly expected, the whole thing was quite amusing. The highlight was probably at the end when George Hardy and Michael Stephenson re-enacted the "Can't Piss Hospitality" scene. I expected they'd just do the dialog but George went all out, hoisted Michael over his shoulder, ran up the stairs on the stage and the whole bit. He managed to keep it together until the final line, at which point he just lost it. It was awesome. And when he got his composure back together and did the line, the applause was quite hearty.

I was looking forward to this screening from the moment I learned about it (back in late April). I was so pumped up about it I was kind of worried it might be a let down but it totally lived up to my expectations and then some. Awesome, awesome event.
