Honored by Name
One of my friends recently started keeping bees and has set up two hives, each with its own pregnant queen inside. Yesterday we were talking on the phone and she told me that one of the queens/colonies was named for me -- an unexpected and fun tribute.
Later in the afternoon I talked with another friend who is adopting a baby boy. He formally asked my permission to name the child after me -- using a masculine Greek version of my name. I was stunned. Somewhat to my surprise I had to think about it for a few moments. It felt as if in formally giving my permission I would be making something of a commitment to the child. I did give my permission, and wish I could be there for the naming ceremony, but they live much too far away for me to attend.
