"Thor" Movie

May 22, 2011 12:52

My utterly personal/subjective recap: Queen of Swords meets divine Norse warrior who's been exiled for bad behavior, loses him too soon, and then commits herself to finding the bridge between worlds.

Not that I would know anything about any of that.

This was by no means a great movie, but I enjoyed it, mostly due to Chris Hemsworth's charisma. It was a two hour comic book romp that didn't try to be anything more. I think it could have been more, given that the story was written by J. Michael Strazynski, directed by Kenneth Branagh, and had several very good actors in the cast. It just didn't have aspirations to excellence.

I was surprised by how convincing Anthony Hopkins was as Odin. I didn't think he was robust enough to carry off the All-Father, but he easily met the (minimal) demands of the role. Actually, the movie asked very little of any of the cast members -- with the possible exception of Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

And one purely personal gripe: someone needs to teach Chris how to kiss a woman's hand correctly. I'm actually suprised that Branagh, with his extensive Shakespearean stage background, didn't coach him better. You don't just smash your lips to her knuckles. . . !
