I think my new journal name should "Oh really?"

Today was my first day in my new position and it was exactly like every other day before it has been. Well, except for the ice cream. We did have an ice cream party this afternoon for no apparent reason.

When I first took this job nearly four years ago, I immediately noticed that if I wanted to advance up the corporate ladder, having only a bachelor’s degree wasn’t going to do. So over the next few years I damned near killed myself earning an MBA. My graduation was on May 1. On May 12, I was invited to apply for a promotion. I hurried up and made a new resume, filled out the online posting, and notified my manager it was done. On May 17 she offered congratulations and said she told HR to make an offer.

I waited for the call. And waited. And waited. And waited.

On June 16, exactly one month later, she finally gets tired of waiting and sends of an email to HR. She tells me she doesn’t understand what the hold up. She has an email from them with the $ amount of the offer but can’t talk to me about it until they formally offer the job.

Finally the next day I get the call but as it turns out they are only allowed to offer me the job, not talk about the details. Also, I can’t accept until I discuss the details with my manager, who now is off for the next three days. HR calls me back on day 3, asking what is talking so long and informing me that I need to accept right away because the requisition is about to expire. Oh really? They waited a full month to talk to me but then get annoyed I take three days to think it over? And there was nothing I could do about it anyway until my manager got back.

The next day we get it all squared away and have a nice chat about who will be my supervisor and what team I will be on and I am quite pleased with the outcome. In the meantime I am to keep doing my current job until they can get sometime to fill it.

Which brings us to today, the official start date of my new position. I sat in the same seat doing the same work with the same people. No one knows I have the new position. None of my new powers have been kicked into effect yet. The only difference is now I am getting paid more to do it. And I’m not about to complain about that.
