I think it could be cool to be one of the bloggers a lot of people read. I’d enjoy a small amount of fame and like to be known around town by a silly blog name like
burghbaby or
pittgirl. But they both have a hook. They both have a reason to make me come back every day and read what they have to say.
What would I write about? I do the same things day in and day out. I doubt anyone would want to spend their time reading about my battle against the weeds in the backyard. Or how I have entire conversations with my cat where I fill in her portion with the voice and attitude of Chris Tucker, ending ever sentence with “bitch.” Or my fascinating commute to/from work…down the hill, over the bridge, ta da!
I don’t care enough about Girl Scouts to make that the focus. (I love the girls but the organization is a disaster.)
I could talk about how my mother is slowly losing her mind. About how both of my brothers are assholes and one of my sisters moved 500 miles away so as to not have to deal with her.
I can’t write about work unless of course I want to get fired. And there’s nothing really exciting that ever happens there anyway. There was a good verbal cat fight the other day but since I can’t talk about what was at the heart of the matter the script would be pretty boring.
The advice successful writers give is usually "write what you know" but if I don’t care enough about anything to write about it, why should anyone else care enough to read about it?
