Norrington was a day out of Port Royal when the enormity of his disgrace caught up with him; squeezed bile past his throat and down the side of the Portuguese ship. He might have been crying -- he told himself the sea left salt on his lips.

An old man was singing. Sorrow rattled his voice, finally silenced with a crash and a sailor's harsh shout. The old Norrington would have turned around and set things right; this Norrington had neither his rank nor honour.

The man was crying. Norrington closed his eyes and thought of revenge, glimmering across the ocean.

Title: Untitled

Characters: Reuentahl, Mittermeyer

Reuentahl would never deign to snap out not a word, but the words hovered loud and clear in the minute stiffening of his shoulders as Mittermeyer drew in a breath. Mittermeyer rolled his eyes and said it anyway, because that was his role as the earthy, sensible best friend:

"Sometimes, they don't just cry."

If Reuentahl's silence was cold before, he thought ruefully, it was now roughly the average temperature of Kapche-Lanka. But hell, they were sitting in a rundown bar with a misspelled "no weapons" sign and downing moonshine that should've been marked with a skull and crossbones. Two young men of the world couldn't get much lower than this.

Even considering the fact that the former paramour of one of them had just tried her (elegant and beautifully perfumed) hand at blackmail. Reuentahl had been angry, then viciously gleeful, and things had gone pear-shaped in more ways than one.

He hoped Evangelin would refrain from asking about the strange dent in the silver musicbox he'd bought her. Which he was late in sending.

"At least she was more interesting than most," Reuentahl murmured, arising from his black and bitter sea. He added, "For a while."

Mittermeyer sighed, and mentally composed an apology to Evangelin.
