"It's kind of creepy, you know?"

Jieun peeks over her shoulder in the direction Hana's looking just in time to spot a figure disappearing around the corner. She turns back and continues rifling through the contents of her locker in search for her History notebook. "I guess," she agrees hesitantly, biting her lip as she glances at the corner again, just in case. Sure enough, a tall, awkwardly built body emerges. He pretends to walk straight across the intersection of the halls, but Jieun catches his nervous glance her way.

"You guess?" Hana sighs. She'd also been watching, though way more obviously. "It's really creepy."

Shrugging, Jieun carefully closes her locker so as not to slam it and gives a noncommittal shrug. "At least he's harmless."

He's harmless, and Jieun's already figured out who he is, not that she'll ever tell Hana that. It is highly doubtful that her best friend would ever approve of Jieun stalking her so-called stalker back.

They settle into their seats in History, their teacher sidling up to the chalkboard with a bored expression. Just as the clock strikes time to start class, one last student comes rushing into the classroom. Jieun pretends to swipe her ponytail back over her shoulder and steals a glance.

His name is Yonggook, and he's been in at least one of Jieun's classes every semester since middle school. That makes two semesters a year for four years. Eight classes, an hour long each. Five days a week. For four years. Jieun hasn't obsessed over it to the point of doing the math, but that's a lot of time together. And Jieun hadn't even noticed until a few months ago, when Yonggook went from being invisible to being, well, Jieun's unofficial stalker.

The term stalker is too severe, but Hana calls him that and Jieun has picked it up by association. Hana says it with disgust, but when Jieun says it to herself, when she's at home wondering when she'll see him the next day (it's never an if, always a when), she says it the same way any other girl may say "prince charming." She always wonders to herself, what will he put in her locker that morning? No doubt something that will make Hana groan and Jieun smile. Secretly. When Hana isn't looking.

Yonggook is incredibly tall, with a round, small face and a large mouth. He isn't reclusive or even shy-- an unlikely stalker to say the least. He ignores the teacher as he enters the room and shouts to his friends to clear a spot for him at the front of the room. Loud, smiling, not popular but not a loner by any means. Jieun watches him every day in class with the utmost care not to get caught but he never once looks her way. Sometimes she spends the entire class period staring at his back. Sometimes she hopes that he does catch her, just once. Today is one of those days, it seems.

"Maybe I should call you the stalker," Hana mumbles into Jieun's ear as they walk arm-in-arm out of the classroom an hour later. Jieun feels her face flush and she gapes back at her friend. Not that there's anything she can say, really.

She ultimately decides to close her mouth and direct her blush at her shoes. Hana just laughs.

"Come on, let's see what he left you this time."

At first Jieun thinks something is leaking from her locker. Something bright green, which definitely can't be good. On closer inspection, she finds an emerald green silk ribbon weaved through the slats in the door of her locker, flapping in the slight breeze caused by the students' movements through the hall. She blushes again and watches it move. It's simple. It's elegant.

"It's weird," Hana groans. At that point Sunhwa comes bouncing down the hallway and Jieun is more than grateful for the distraction. She and Hana discuss club activities and Jieun gently removes the ribbon from his locker, feeling the smooth material between her fingers.

"That stalker give it to you?" Sunhwa's voice interrupts. She cracks her gum and gives the ribbon a quick once-over. "Kinda nice," she concludes, and then returns to her conversation. Hana gives Jieun a quick smile before allowing Sunhwa to drag her away. Jieun hadn't listened enough to know where they're going, but she's glad for the privacy. With another quick glance down the hallway, she sees him standing with his usual group of friends. Right in front of some lockers that are at the perfect angle to see Jieun's on the other side. How convenient.

From her pencil case she retrieves a thick black marker which she usually uses for write on the covers of her notebooks. She turns the ribbon around and carefully writes along the ribbed underside before tossing the marker into the locker and slamming the door. The slam makes her jump, but that's the point. Even from somewhere across the hall, where someone may or may not be watching, that kind of slam will attract attention. His eyes on her (she can sense it now), she adjusts her bag on her shoulder and re-weaves the ribbon through the slats in the locker.

It's fifteen minutes past when Jieun usually leaves school for home, so she musters up all of her acting skills and heaves the biggest sigh she can while checking her watch. She walks straight down the hall, past Yonggook and his friends, her heart pounding. She can feel every second pass, like it's in sync with her heart. She doesn't even breathe until she's outside the school, leaning against the gates and panting.

She knows exactly what happened when she left. She can picture it perfectly. As soon as she is out of sight, a mere thirty seconds ago, Yonggook bids his friends a casual farewell. He makes some excuse about having to go back to the classroom for something, but assures them that he can go alone. They head off while he makes his way very slowly in the opposite direction. Just as he passes Jieun's locker, he grabs the ribbon.

He doesn't look at it until he's safe inside the empty classroom. Panting and blushing just like Jieun, he turns the ribbon over. His hands are shaking a little.

'I like you, too.'
