So I guess most of Canada watched the horror that happened between Team Canada vs. Team Russia at the gold medal game on 01/05/11. What a way to start the new year, eh?
I was not able to watch the game due to work that night, but kept tabs on it on the TSN website. I was practically giddy with excitement when I saw it was 3-0 Canada. I thought they were going to be the dominating team that they were being all tournament. About an hour later, I see the score as 3-2. I check again ten minutes later, 3-3. Then 4-3, then 5-3, and then it was over.
So then I think: Are you telling me that they stopped skating and laid back all the third period and let this happen? AYFKM??!! How could they do that? And against Russia of all teams (because of their speed and physical play)! You do NOT lay back when you have a lead, no matter what time of the game it is. You just don't do it! Playing the way they did in the third period is NOT the way to win championships.
As depressed as I am now, I really hope those boys learned something from this, and if some/most of them make it to next year's roster they'll learn never to let something like this happen again. Hell, Hockey Canada better make sure this doesn't happen again.
Our only bright sides: This was our tenth final in a row and our medal streak is up to thirteen.
And congratulations to Russia for their comeback.
BTW, sorry for my rant, but I had to get it out of me.
