virtual magic?

Found this discussion on TerraNova as to why magic and fantasy narratives are more popular means of creating a sense of 'non-ordinary' or 'alternate' reality than, say, science fiction in most online games. Many of the comments assert that magic is the less 'logical' of the two, therefore game designers can more easily 'get-away-with' scenarios that would be unbelievable in our day-to-day world. While magick has a technology & logic of its own, does the magical/fantasy framework lend itself more readily to stimulating the right-brained, creative, imaginal side of consciousness? Does a scifi narrative automatically trigger a rationalistic perspective? Is there some inherently more 'mystical' appeal to virtual magic--stimulated by some abiding desire for real magics--that renders magically oriented games more popular?

Then I think of books like the Dune series and it's blend of both SF and fantasy genres, basing its mythos on ideals of Human Potential, along with tendrils of shi'a Islam, etc, etc. Hm.
