Even though it's pretty un-PC, I thought Wehn's rant about overly-proud-of-the-war British was funny, almost like a German take on a classic David Mitchell blast.

Totally agreed. I recently moved over to the UK from America and had a great conversation with some new British friends over who really won the war: America or Britain. We were all very assured that our own country was the real powerhouse or, at least, that's what we were taught in primary school. :)

And neither country really likes to recognize the actual truth: Russia would have inevitably crushed Hitler no matter what.

Thanks for these discussions .... good stuff ...

I must say that Wehn is a bit of an odd-looking fellow ... but he IS funny.

Henning is hilarious.
Try and listen to him on some podcasts, he is absolutely brilliant.

Also Sandi Toksvig makes me love her more and more every time she's on.
I miss What the Dickens.

personally find it awfully hard to reconcile the hellion he apparently was in his youth with the sedate, bashful and mannered Fry we all know so well.

Have you ever read Mohab is my Washpot? However Mohab is spelled. anyway, I could be projecting or something, but what I see is a kid who did stuff he thought up at first b/c he didn't know better. Later is was to make a point. Now, what's shyness and sedate is, IDK, mental filters imposed by years of trying to blend in. Be yourself and get smacked on the nose, so to speak, often enough, you hide yourself and overthink each response so it seems like you think slow and act shy. IMHO, and all that rot.

Wehn has been funny on Radio Four's the News Quiz (which everybody ought to listen to if they don't already, it's chaired by Sandi!) but yeah, he didn't get too much screentime here.

I liked the episode but my main thought was: "What's gonna happen to the overall points tally at qi_fans now that Alan's gone down a zillion points?"
