I was born on the island of Guam into a military family. I have one sister and my parents are still married. I was an easygoing child, not requiring much. My father is a photographer for the Navy; hence this is why I love cameras and pictures.
When I was in 8th grade, I moved to Whidbey Island, WA where I attended high school. I was a shy kid until I met the Galbraith’s. I joined JROTC, “Navy in the school,” program and I also joined the rifle team. I was not very good to begin with, but through my relationship with the Galbraith’s, I was able to travel to tournaments and camps and perfect my skills on primitive devices. My parents did not have time or did not want to devote time to taking me to matches, or buying equipment, I did everything on my own. I spent the better part of my junior year on the Galbraith’s couch as I was with them all the time. I was told by my family and by peers that I would not succeed in rifle shooting. I proved them wrong many times over. Others said that I would not make it through college, that I was not that kind of person. With encouragement from my “foster” family, I applied to college and got in. I wanted to major in Mechanical Engineering, but the department shot me down not once, but 5 times in a row. Discouraged, but not defeated, I switched universities for one semester so that I could get a 4.0 and then transferred back to re-apply to the department. The 6th time I got in. I find it ironic that I have the highest grades out of the entire department, and I am more intelligent on many things compared to other students, yet I got rejected time and time again. I am now their biggest asset. I graduate one semester late in December as a result of the transfer, but last summer I got a position at Boeing as an Engineer. I make changes to the blue prints for the F-22 fighter jet being built currently. I am also currently applying to law schools where I will continue my education that many told me I would not be able to do. I want to be a patent Lawyer. I have had many upsets and setbacks in my life, but I have made it my life to overcome what everyone says I cannot do. If it were not for the Galbraith’s, I might not have been as successful at shooting, and I might still be a bit shy, but with a little encouragement, I proved everyone wrong. I have a passion for life that burns so deep, I know in my heart that I can do anything and be anyone that I want. I am Nicholas S. Smith.
