Marcon 44 has a theme: British Sci-fi. Anyone who was at MarsCon in 2008 will no doubt remember the British Invasion. Marcon this year had a Klingon Invasion in honor of the Klingon Assault Group's 20th anniversary.
That meant Klingons. Lots of Klingons. Make that a ton of costumed Klingons in impressive battle armor. Klingons from Canada and even a Klingon from Germany. The press came and shot us.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a2Emz5XpTQ Panels included:
Getting A Head In The Klingon Empire: A makeup panel hosted by
qob with me as the head. We had one obnoxious guy who wanted the panel to be all about him. He left halfway through when Qob went into areas he had no knowledge of. Everyone else in the audience enjoyed the panel. Some of them had some good ideas on other things. Heavily attended by Klingons.
How Do You Say That In Klingon?: me, Qob, and qurgh, who is with the KLI. qurgh brought a bunch of Klingon language resources and made a handout that included some phrases and links for websites. We read a scene from "A Klingon Christmas Carol" which was well received. There is a ton of interest in the play.
Surviving the Klingon Homeworld: A Guide For The Federation Tourist:
geohard, Qob, and I performed improv with audience participation. We discussed the show on the way to the con and the audience liked what we came up with. Two audience members brought tribbles into the panel and we had a lot of fun harassing them, including putting them on trial for not having spayed their tribbles. They were good sports and played along. Audience members called up to participate in the mu'qaD veS came up with some good insults.
A panel about Dungeon Masters and Players competing to "win": I attended this one. There were about 10 people there, including about half of an entire gaming group. This was my one and only panel that I attended that I wasn't on or part of the 20th anniversary events.
sqotty was not at this panel, and therefore he missed me talking about the Nomad Campaign, including Secret DM Stuff(tm). In essence, "winning" really isn't an issue for the DMs and players who were there. A good panel that could have gone on for another hour without anyone noticing the time passing by.
Events!
KAG's 20th Anniversary general meeting: We all gathered in a panel room except the people at the fan table. Thought Admiral Kerla ran the meeting. All of the Admirals got up and spoke about their fleets, Kris epetai-Kurkura was there as well. Almost everyone was in costume, including a very impressive half-dragon Klingon. We decided to issue challenges to every club to beat us in the blood-spilling event. I could not donate blood because the bloodmobile came to my work a mere two weeks prior. The Klingons won, besting all other clubs combined.
After that was the KAG Assembly on the Big Staircase: The press was there recording a lot of Klingons in battle armor gathered in one place. We got shot at repeatedly. Thought Admiral Kerla became Former Thought Admiral Kerla and passed on the responsibility to our new Thought Admiral Krikor.
The Costume Contest: There were some great costumes. Best of Show went to "300 Klingons" with Krikor as a Klingon Spartan. Qob and Geohard as the Bruise Brothers entertained the crowd. There were several KAGsters in the masquerade.
Room Party! There were about 5 parties. I made it to all of them. A Ghostbusters group, Barfleet, and another couple parties. Barfleet had three rooms, one drinking room, one dancing room, and one quieter room. Apparently there was a rule that no one was to leave the party rooms with alcohol or bring in alcohol from other parties. I didn't know this until the next day. I'd been doing like I do at Convergence. Go in, get drink, stay and talk to people for a while, move on. If there is still alcohol in my cup, continue sipping while I wander. I must have had the invisibility shield up, because no one noticed I had drinks in my hand and no one stopped me. KAG won first prize for room parties.
Fan Tables: Throughout the con, there were tables set up for each club in attendance. KAG won second prize. Other clubs present were the 501st, a Ghostbusters club, a Federation ship, Barfleet, a Harry Potter fanclub, and lots more.
A fun con all around. Much sleep deprivation ensued. The Klingons have conquered.
