I was a nelf priest for about a year. Then my wife started playing and she went priest too. I decided to make something complementary to help her level, so jokingly, I made a gnome warrior.
That was in 2005. The nelf is level 65, the gnome is 80 with two maxed profs and some Naxx gear (if I had more time, I'd be joining my guild's push into Ulduar, six or so bosses down).
Gnome warriors are fun, although it was immensely disorienting going from such a tall race to a short one. It really makes a difference in the way the game looks.
I agree about the gaming together bit. My wife used to deride my gaming and stuff, and it really caused quite the wedge.
Finally after a few years, I got her to break down and roll up a character on my account. She made a nelf warrior, then asked if we could play together. I said we couldn't while she had her character on my account.
20 minutes and 2 levels later, she was asking when we were going to Best Buy for her copy.
That was October 2005. Since then we've gotten midnight release copies of both BC and LK (both collectors editions, of course), and attended BlizzCon last year (although we won't be going this year, her best friend is getting married that Saturday, but we'll be paying for the live stream - at least one, so I can get Grunty, maybe a second stream for her pet too).

We also both have stuffed murlocs on our desks.

Though I would still volunteer for the firing squad of the person who made the murloc "warcry".

(That awful shot was taken and uploaded in the hotel we were at, poor poor lighting.)
