Of all the fic I was bidding on at Sweet Charity, Everysecondtuesday was the writer who made my little fangirl's heart go 'get her, win her, want her, Now.' See, she had listed Naruto as one of her potential fandoms and I am always craving a good Lee/Gaara fic. See Rec - Diplomatic Relations. And then I won her. (And there was great cheering in Fanville. Yeah!!!)
And I got scared. What if she couldn't write Lee/Gaara like I wanted? What if she was a Naruto/Sasake person? Shi/Choiji? Sakura/Ino? Teamgroupings? What if, what if ... Yes, I admit it. I panicked. I dumped every pairing I loved in Naruto on this poor woman - and a few I'd never read. (sigh) I'm so lucky she didn't flame me, kill me, and salt my bones. Instead, she spent months, months, Months trying to give me what she thought I wanted. She lost her beta, and then another one ran away. (I swear, I'm personally responsible for the lose of more betas in the last few months .... sigh) Then she gave up, and wrote it like she wanted.
:-)
Stepping Stones is one of the strongest, tightest, smoothest stories I've ever read in AnY fandom. The author covers canon, adds an incredible layer of fandom, and lays it out for the reader to revel in as I have only seen authors such as O.S. Card and J. Lindsey do. Yes, I think it's that good. It's fast, showing events like the click of a camera. Almost every character of Konoha and Suna has a moment that the reader can enjoy - some are funny, some are painful, many are bittersweet. These are the people you know from the series growing up. Life is happening and in the middle of it all, Rock Lee and Gaara try to build a relationship. Wow, just, Wow!!
This is not a story I will rec if you haven't seen Naruto. You will miss more than you understand if you aren't a fan already. But if you are, if you have seen Naruto and wonder what these children may become as they grow,
Stepping Stones is the story for you.
"You will stay right there, young man, and you will rest." Guy had gone ultra-paternal, and Tenten was doing her best to stay supportively in the shadows where she couldn't be dragged into this latest argument.
If Guy would just leave, then she and Neji could tie Lee to the bed again and have done with it, at least until supper and Sakura came to keep him company. Tenten looked at Neji in silent pleading, but he just gave that small shrug as if to say, "What can you do?" Which, okay, yeah, Tenten kind of agreed-Guy and Lee were a force unto themselves-but if this weren't stopped, soon, there would be speeches and group hugs, and there was just too much testosterone and temptation toward wandering hands for Tenten today, especially considering Neji had his hair down and the hospital had caved to Lee's pestering on the spandex. Tenten couldn't be held responsible for ass-gropage if she was forced into close proximity. She still wasn't certain how she'd survived puberty with her team between the spandex and Neji's tendency to train half-naked when keeping track of his changing reach.
