It's an optimistic beginning to 2010 (Jesus, 2010? Futurific).
2009, what a year. January was pretty thoroughly dedicated to quitting my job at ISpace. Started taking tango classes at the 8th style. Finished the translation of Alex's book. Broke up with Michael. Started dating Mike. William and I took an excellent WFR class from RMI. Moved out of the Butoh House back to Mom's. Spent a bunch of time hanging out at Sureshot. Had an unfortunate amount of drama with T, which eventually culminated with him putting our friendship on hold until we could mutually be more sane around one another. Spent two weeks in Chicago visiting Jon at Northwestern (and going to prom), and decided that I wasn't interested in "dry" grad school (and also that while it was nice to remedy the prom situation, that sort of event is not for me). Started working for Li'l Buckaroos. Took SCUBA lessons (mildly disastrous). Started spending time with Nat again. Went to NorWesCon for the first time (and probably the last time - it was ok, but I was only particularly impressed with one panel out of all the ones that I went to. Though I might go with Mike again next year just to hang out in the bar and spend time with people). Started working for Fetch. Spent two months volunteering for SIFF. Took a bartending class with William. Briefly restarted Exegeses where we read Difficult Conversations, which turned out to be a really meaningful book for me. Met and spent a bunch of time hanging out with Saul. Tried to get onto the DPW team, but ended up just doing rangering/greendotting, which was a total blast and gave me a ton to think about. Had a completely amazing time at Burning Man, fell completely unexpectedly (but sadly fruitlessly) in love, went on an open-ended road trip to California (which in hindsight, I should have probably planned at least a little bit in advance or at least should have had a clear transportation budget for - mobility is important!). Hung out with T, participated in various hooliganism at NASA AMES and Stanford with Sasha, and went on a rather breathtaking last-minute evening outing to hole-in-the-wall beach with Martin. Was recalled back to Seattle (as is characteristic for my trips) on account of my paternal grandmother passing. Spent two months volunteering as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Seattle Bookfest. Got involved with ESAR. Moved into the Phantom Lodge. Took Sonia's Rails class. Started hanging out with Bryan. Started volunteering for ARC and HfH. Ended my horseback riding lessons at Hunter's Run. Started volunteering as a tester (which turned into volunteering as a dev) for ClinicLink. Got a half-time job with QA for Sublime Media. Started working in the shop with Lawrence. Got a consistent tango partner.
So that's 09 loosely in terms of people and events. The major changes in all of this have been: quit my job, moved to Eastgate, developed a significant interest in field medicine, finally started to get involved with Search and Rescue-type operations and micro-volunteering projects, and became a lot more relaxed around people (and around myself). Overall, a really good year. I'm glad I took the year off work. I feel that I've grown a lot as a person; I like the direction I'm facing and I'm pleased with the people I have in my life and with how I relate to them. I feel creatively satisfied and that I have both projects to work on and the environment to do them in and people to do them with. There are missing pieces, of course, some more acute than others, but I think things will figure themselves out, and I'm in a solid place in the meantime while they do.
Here's to the end of one year and a start of the next. Happy New Year, and all my love.
