Castrovalva
None for ages, and then two come along at once, as we headed to Dulwich Picture Gallery again yesterday for the Amazing World of M C Escher exhibition. Expecting it to be popular we had pre-booked and it was busy, though manageably so. Despite the popularity of so many works, it was definitely worth seeing them up close; their very nature means there is always something new to see. Amongst a couple of self portraits, Castrovalva, several Regular Divisions of the Plane and the particularly famous Ascending and Descending inspired by Roger and Lionel Penrose, there were other works such as Balcony and Print Gallery that were completely new to me. It's perplexing that Escher claimed to have no mathematical ability, but maybe that's fitting for a man who produced such paradoxical images.
