Travian
I've recently been playing a massively-multiplayer development/empire game called Travian. It only takes about 30 minutes of time a day (at the moment, I suspect the time investment increases).

Being in at the beginning would be a good thing. I started in fairly late on the first server and my neighbours are somewhat scary. When I exited beginners peace, the pool seemed to get very deep very quickly (luckily there are good tools for surviving attacks intact, like building a high level Cranny for your villiage)
On the new server I am starting in the South East, as is Gold.
