The manga art is somewhat wonky in the beginning, but still kind of awesome. And the feels, oh god the story is beautiful but incredibly brutal and at times, bleak. The anime is released every Sunday, and Funimation is releasing the official subs on that Sunday (for subscribers) or the following week (for everyone else).
It deconstructs several common Shonen tropes, and treats its characters equally regardless of gender without relying on stereotypes. There's badass chicks that are tomboys or even easy to confuse as guys, and girly-girls that are also badasses. There's tough macho dudes, but also awesome guys that are physically not strong.
Humanity's strongest warrior? Is a tiny, snarky dude that's a clean freak.
Also, they manage to sneak in LGBT characters without it feeling forced or stereotypical.
It also manages to be very complex and layered, with all sorts of delicious morally-and-psychologically complex characters. It explores in a subtle way the impact of using child soldiers, the positive and negatives of humanity, and various themes such as self-sacrifice and survival. There's SO MUCH that you realize was hidden there from the beginning, when reading it a second time after certain revelations.
So what is this awesome thing about? Shingeki no Kyojin ("Attack on Titan") is an action/horror series about humanity attempting to win a war against mindless, regenerating giants that have an instinctive hunger for human flesh. They go about this by using steampunk-ish waist-mounted, gas-propelled grappling hooks to swing around like Spiderman and dual-wield swords. When it works, it's incredibly effective.
But when it doesn't, you're very dead. There's a lot of people getting eaten in this series, I kid you not.
There's also many shocking twists, developments, and SUPERPOWERS which are spoilers to discuss but are awesome. You should seriously be into this series like....right now.
