In which I babble on about fandoms I have discovered, and the wonderful world of "Oh, hey. Hulu has free anime let's watch some" and "oh, hey, let us read something on onemanga".
What this really reveals is that I am a pervert who watches too much fanservice.
What I've been watching/reading over the last few months.
* Sekirei - I love this series, and it just seems to get better and better. It seems to have become more serious, and more character-and-action-driven than in it's earlier days. Harem anime + Fighting anime + female creator who loves big boobs and fanservice + AWESOME = Sekirei.
* Puella Magi Madoka Magica - .....me and everyone else. Deconstructions and Magical Girls and beautiful art and beautiful music and yes please.
* Queen's Blade - I AM NOT ASHAMED. It is at best a guilt-pleasure series, Sword-and-Sorcery fantasy mixed with more fanservice than you can shake a stick at. It just barely avoids being hentai by virtue of no one having sex. But it's kind of shamelessly fun.
* Highschool DxD - A harem/fanservice series! It is VERY fanservicey, but I actually....really like the cast, which is all I really need to get into a series. A perverted loser dies, and is reborn as a devil in the service of a beautiful, red-headed princess of hell. Fighting, chess motifs, and a protagonist you could actually see girls falling for.
* Freezing - I gotta compare this one to Sekirei, in that both combine fanservice with strong-willed women being treated as serious fighters. Genetically-altered women attend military academies, where they are trained to fight alien beings from another dimension.
* Pandora Hearts - Victorian-styled fantasy with a dash of mystery and horror, with HEAVY influences and references to Alice in Wonderland. It's one of my absolute favorites, with a strong cast and plenty of twists and turns. The heir to a great noble family finds himself cast into the Abyss, a legendary hellish dimension, and makes a bargain with one of the denizens to escape. He wants to learn the truth of his "sin", while she is desperately searching for her lost memories. The anime is an EXCELLENT adaptation, but ends abruptly when the series had just started to pick up. You can easily watch it, then pick things up with chapter 33 of the manga.
* Black Butler - This one gets a lot of comparisons to Pandora Hearts, as both are Victorian era stories (PH is another world, BB is alternate history Earth) and deal with some horror elements. An orphaned noble makes a deal with a demon, and deals with various nasty business in the London underworld while seeking revenge against the murderers of his family.
* High School of the Dead - Fanservice anime meets zombie apocalypse. A group of high school students try to fight their way to safety, after a pandemic sweeps the world. The manga has, unfortunately, been on hiatus for about a year now. :(
* Tiger and Bunny - IN A WORLD ..... where superheros are corporate-sponsered and take part in a hit reality television show, a failing veteran is forced to form the FIRST EVER superteam with an up-and-coming hero. One part buddy-cop show, one part loving examination/parody of western superheroes, and all awesome.
Other things I am squeeing about:
- Resident Evil 6: JAKE JUST KISS HER ALREADY
- Once Upon A Time: DISNEY + LOST + ROBERT CARLYLE = yes plz
