Alexandrian Camels

Summary: For
coraldawn. Alexander dreams. Hephaistion doesn't. This story is weird and short.
"It will be a magnificent city, the likes of which the world has never seen before. It will spread from horizon to horizon, and beckon as a safe harbor to ships. It will be a center of learning and culture, a place where learned men from all over the world can come together and exchange ideas -- Aristotle will approve of that. It will be the most glorious city in the world, far more than Persepolis. And, generations from now, people will say, 'Alexander did more than make war. He set up this city, a city that surpassed anything Philip or Darius could make'."
Alexander grinned into the setting sun and closed his eyes. He could almost see his city already, even if none of it had been built yet. It would, truly, be beyond anything else in the world.
"What do you think, Hephaistion?" he asked, his eyes still closed. "Will my city be forever?"
"That camel bit me," Hephaistion grumbled.
Alexander frowned, turned around, and opened his eyes. His friend was sitting on the sand and rubbing his forearm, looking cross. "What?" he asked, his mind more than half still on the future.
"Can camels have rabies?" Hephaistion asked, squinting at the bite.
With a sigh, Alexander flopped down on the sand next to Hephaistion. "I'm sure you're fine," he muttered, rather sour. Hephaistion was supposed to listen to his dreams and encourage him, not ignore him.
Hephaistion grinned at him, sudden and broad and laughing and full of love. "Of course I'm fine. And, when your city becomes the most magnificent in the world, I hope you don't allow any camels inside of it. You can still see where it spit on me before biting me." He pointed to a dark spot on his chiton.
Alexander snorted. "No camels allowed in Alexandria," he agreed. "I wouldn't want to give you any reason to not visit my grand city."
