1940's- Socialist reforms boost country prestige and revive a sense of nationalism and hope. Returning soldiers greeted with open arms, hailed as heroes, attempt to gain a sense of normalcy. Liberal democratic society deemed champion over fascism and communism and other extremist groups.
1950's- Relative social peace and prosperity. Soldiers attempt to cope with life after wartime and strive to find normalcy, thus, the return to the nuclear family. Baby boomer generation born. Era defined informally by an era of "cheerful robots" and by the end of ideology. People made complacent. Emergence of the "Power Elite."
1960's- Radical rebellion against political complacency. Progressives call for justice as fairness, participation in democracy, civil rights. Liberal democratic theories pushed forward, "Yippie Manifesto," "Sharon Statement," riots in L.A. and Detroit. Vietnam. Kent State shootings.
1970's- Return to complacency. Disillusioned yippies and progressives become depressed and "give up." Become "yuppies." Split in democratic party gives rise to the new right. Development of narcissistic "me" culture defined by rampant consumerism, drugs, and overall detachment from the political sphere. Power elite grows.
1980's- More of the same. More rampant consumerism and drug abuse. Overall complacency and disinterest in political issues. "Me" culture dissolves nuclear family and allows the continued growth of the power elites. Conservative "Moral Majority" comes to power.
1990's- Return to rebellion, less against politics, more against society and institutions. "Generation X." Disillusionment of the middle class from the power elites and political leaders of the times. More political involvement from the younger generation. More political interest. "Me" culture still prevalent. Power elites still dominant.
2000's- ?
Where does that leave us? Is this generation the complacent, "the government will take care of us" minded, apathetic generation? Are we the generation that gives up on making any kind of difference in the way the powers that be run the world because such a change is difficult? I hate watching our culture backslide because people don't think the government applies to them. How do you want to be defined? I don't want to be defined. I want to do the defining.
