Alternative Wednesday!

One bit that st_sardonicist used to do on his Ell Jay was a bit called Rock Broughten Theater, where he would toss up a metal video from YouTube and write briefly about why they were either important or brought the rock. In a similar vein, I'm going to start a semi-random bit about my favorite genre of music that doesn't get much play anymore --- alternative rock and post-punk. Alt rock and post-punk were the meat and taters that got me into non mainstream music and while most of the bands I'll be highlighting are either gone or in decline, the music...ah, the music still remains.

The early 90's saw a HUGE revival in power pop and while such stalwarts like Matthew Sweet have moved on to other endeavors, Teenage Fanclub still brings the crunchy guitars and sweet melodies that defined the genre. Listening to this track, Sparky's Dream, is like listening to a love letter which is what pop music does best. As for the band, they've gone from label to label until finally starting their own label a few years back.
