Today I went down to the garage to get into my car, and noticed to my horror that both my and
unsound's bike racks were empty; I called him in a panic as I was driving away from the garage to say that I thought our bikes had been stolen but that I had to go to work and couldn't investigate further.
He took care of filing the police report while I was at work; a later review of the security tape archive for our building revealed that the bikes were stolen, by someone who let themselves in to the (locked) main entrance of the building and then the (locked) garage entrance, at around 4:30 this morning. It feels super-duper-creepy that the building can be accessed so quickly and easily. I'm grateful that nothing was done to my car, at least, though one of our neighbors wasn't so lucky--the thieves used one of our U-locks to smash a window and steal stuff from a car. Thankfully we have renters' insurance that ought to get us a little bit of money back for our bikes (which I'm certain we have no hope of seeing ever again).
I then came home from work at around midnight to find that someone had parked in front of our garage, making it impossible for anyone to get in or out. I found a spot on the street and called the police, who promptly came to my address for the second time today to assess the situation. They ran the plate and determined that the car was registered to an owner from far away and was likely stolen and dumped. It took about an hour to get everything cleared up and the car towed.
Enough crime, please and thank you. Sheesh.
