Title: To Russia With Love Author: pyrrhiccomedy Rating: PG, excusing bad language. Characters: America Premise: America writes to Russia from the front lines of the Great War in 1918.
GUUUUH. You know when people say they'd quote their favorite line but it means they'd quote everything and maybe it's an exaggeration? It's not. I would honest-to-God quote everything. I have no clue how you do it, but you always manage to capture the side of America (as a character and nation) that's SO ENDEARING, even with all his idiotic faults. And I think I've probably mentioned it before, but I think we secretly share very similar historical/world views. But yeah. I love your America. I am IN LOVE with your America. Especially with this first-person dialogue and how you can tell he's running his mouth off but is just so enthusiastic about freedom and fed up with Europe and..!!! I'm going to shut up now, but this is wonderful

I've kinda gotten that impression, too. *grins* While reading up on Wilsonian idealism for this fic, I was like "ohGodohGodohGod, this is all going to be misappropriated in the Truman Doctrine, DO NOT WANT!"
I also gotta say, America/sky and Britain/sea is one of the most poignant Hetalia themes ever
I really wanted to throw in a shout-out to the first manned flights, just for this reason.
WAIT ONE MORE THING. I don't really know how far you are ahead, time-zone wise, but HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY! I swear, you will have your fanart someday...just not that soon OTL
OH MY GOD IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TOMORROW, I TOTALLY FORGOT. XD Thank you! Also, I still haven't written your birthday story yet, so like. *adjusts collar* Don't worry about it.
Squeee! New TCE stuffs! *melts in happiness puddle*
I love that America took the trouble to write a long-ish letter to Russia even while they were at war (cute!). The letter format is a very clever way of presenting the piece, imo, since lots of the real historic primary source material available for WWI (and II) is in the form of soldier's letters, diaries, personal missives, etc.
You acknowledge the strength of their friendship and their bond beautifully (and yes, Woodrow Wilson so totally shipped it! We read that speech for a history extra credit assignment). Even with the strains of war and Russia's bloody revolution and the coming terror, America's love liking for Russia is not yet close to the breaking point. I had to flinch when I read the bit about 'let's agree never to fight...etc' though-foreshadowing killing me sweetly! He sounds so awesome through the whole thing, awkward and enthusiastic and idealistic by turns, in all the right places, just like America would be when trying to put it into written words to his

Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed the letter format! It was a lot of fun to do something a little different, and a war letter felt like a good excuse. =D

I love paraphrasing history like that! Used to drive my classmates nuts, but you just know someone else had to be rolling their eyes behind the scenes at that time too.
I've always really wanted to do a "TRANSLATED" project--where I'd take important historical documents and speeches that are really important, and actually really awesome, but the language is a little archaic, or dense, or we're all overly familiar with the rhetoric, so when we see that "When in the course of human events" our eyes just glaze over--and translate them into modern, casual English. Just so people can see what the authors meant in a new light, you know? Like, that whole first paragraph, all America is saying is "Yo, England, this just isn't working out, and I feel like I should explain why." Or the Constitution, or the Magna Carta, or the Lord's Prayer...there's so much!
I'm falling in love more and more with your America. He is passional, idealist, full of good intentions, brave and a little bit fool. He is the romantic images of the youth! But we can see also a progressive growth of the character's personality. He grow up inside the story and he grow up side by side with the history.
-Seriously, let's never fight. Our mutual stubbornness would be world-ending-: the last famous words, really ;_;
-Oh my God, does France ever shut up about Alsace-Lorraine? Holy shit. It's like, the size of Connecticut. I'd just give him Connecticut if it meant he'd quit bitching- oh America! XD Think about it before doing it! :P Connecticut = the New French Vital Region! XDD
He grow up inside the story and he grow up side by side with the history.
Oh, thank you so much! I really do feel like America's grown up so much since he first showed up all twitchy and nervous in the Winter Palace back in 1780, and I'm really glad that's coming through. =D
