Before life eats my brain again. I know, shameless.
Charlene “Charlie” McGee is the main -sort of- character of Stephen King’s Firestarter, one of the best novels ever, really. Or just anything the man has ever written, actually. But moving on…
Canon and Character notes.
There are several little details that should be taken into account when it comes to Charlie and her canon. First of all, it’s being moved to the modern times, and even more, both Fandom time and her own move at the same time. This is to make her transition as easy as possible, considering her life is already as messed up as it can get.
Second, her canon, it ended a bit more like the movie and not so much like the book. Meaning? She sent a letter with her story instead of going herself, and said letter never arrived. The Shop never stopped going after her, so soon after recovering in the Manders’ farm, she left. Running away has been her favorite activity since she can remember now; it’s been a rough life, and she has had to become a jack of all trades of sorts to survive; she knows how to pick locks, cook a number of dishes, repair furniture, play several instruments, and a long list; she usually hooks up with someone or a small group, makes them believe she was there all along, and sticks to do whatever they do. She’s a survivalist before anything else, and I’ll be disappointed if she doesn’t seriously consider leaving Fandom at least a couple of times. She won’t, of course. Well, I hope, but paranoiac could easily replace Roberta as her second name…she wouldn’t mind, actually.
Third, I realize that the last Charlie’s world also included the rest of Stephen King’s works, or at least a good part, since he loves to mix his references and what not. I’m going to largely keep this unclear, mostly because anyone has the right to either app someone from those canons -and now I want to see a John Smith teaching Science in Fandom- and I prefer to work on that on a case-by-case basis. At any rate, Charlie has been too busy to notice whatever else might be happening, and as far as she is concerned, she’s the only freak of her world.
Have you seen Firestarter: Rekindled? If you haven’t, don’t, it’s the worst thing it could have happened to her canon. She’s from before it, and if she goes through it, I’m going to have so much fun messing with it…but yeah, no brunette Charlie for me.
So, the basic rundown of the character.
First, there was the Shop, a “secret” government agency. The Shop wanted to create a paramilitary force of “super soldiers” with psychic powers to defend the country, and like every secret agency that prides itself of being so, they were all in for using the civilians they wanted to protect as test subjects. Enter Andrew “Andy” McGee and Victoria “Vicy” Tomilson, Charlene’s “Charlie” future parents. The nicknames run strong in the family. Bock Andy and Vicky were college students when they subscribed for an experiment. For money, obviously; they, along with a group of people, were administered the drug known as Lot Six, which had effects similar to LSD, so you can imagine the trip they ended up in. After they had a telepathic conversation, they were deemed as failures by the Shop -even though they had been among the few that hadn’t died in the experiment- and ended up hooking up. And they lived happily ever after.
Well, sort of. The Shop never stopped spying on them, and after Charlie was born, they were particularly interested on her. So when she was seven, she was kidnapped, and Vicky was killed, although those weren’t the plans in the first place. Andy found her daughter, and together they ran away. And she has been running ever since.
There’s more to the story, of course; she got captured by the Shop along with her father, she got tested, her father was killed, and she killed a lot of people; killing people has become a part of her life she wishes she could just forget about it, but most of the times the Shop catches up, she’s forced to defend herself.
Powers, she can has.
Pyrokinesis.
Yes, she can set things on fire just by looking at them, sometimes just by being close to them, too. The scientists analyzing her thought she would be able to cause nuclear explosions by her teens. Well, she can’t, or rather, she won’t; there is a good chance that if a telepath works his/her way around in her brain that he/she will find a lot of mind blocks keeping her from going nuclear. Still, Charlie’s PK is ridiculous. In the book she was shown to be able to set bricks on fire; in reality, what is she doing is causing the molecules of the objects she wants to burn to simply explode, creating “molecular fire”. The name is wrong, I know, but it’s not plasma. Somewhere in between? Look, she can literally set anything in fire, but the less conventional -say, water- the more difficult. She can create a pretty damn impressive sea of fire though.
Charlie’s PK is addictive. It feels good using it, and the more often she uses it, the more she needs to keep using it. At the same time, the more time she spends without using it, the worst she feels. Think withdrawal symptoms and you’ve got it. One Big fire every week should keep her under control, more or less.
Telekinesis.
Those scientists also said she would eventually be able to “break” the Earth in two. Cue the mind blocks! Still, her TK is strong enough to allow her to lift several tons of whatever she wants, but she has the hardest time ever trying to simulate flight with it; she can make a barrier and lift herself, or others, but otherwise “flying” is more like “throwing herself around” and she can’t really hit the brakes without feeling like she just hit a wall, face first. It works a lot better in big things, and handling several small things will probably cause her a headache later.
Telepathy.
Is potentially strong enough to do a lot of awesome stuff, but she has only used it to read minds her whole life, so it works in a very intuitive way. Her mental defenses are really strong, but anyone with enough skill should be able to go past them; she will notice though.
Precognition.
Outside Fandom, this was the ability that kept her literally a step in front of the Shop. Inside Fandom, it’s going to be somehow blocked by the island, although she will still get some things; Charlie won’t be able to know when an event will happen, although might get a “funny feeling” now and then. As well as her other powers, it’s very strong, and not the kind of vision where you don’t know what it means until it’s too late, no; Charlie gets all the information she needs.
Empathy.
Very, very basic. She usually knows how others feel around her, but beyond that she hasn’t used it for most. Nothing about manipulating emotions or whatever. Very strong emotions might get her, and she might somehow affect others in the same way, but anything conscious.
IMPORTANT!
Charlie is a lot of things. Calling her “complicated” would be an understatement and really unoriginal, but yeah, she’s a mess of issues. OCD, PTSD, she has them. She’s paranoiac, slow to trust others, possibly snarky for not reason, prone to curse, has strong authority issues and a tendency to stick her foot in her mouth so often it can’t be healthy. It’s not my interest to insult, offend or make anyone uncomfortable. She never uses her powers on people -as long as they aren’t really special, specific cases- so she won’t go reading minds or setting things on fire, but she might not strike everyone’s fancy, so I’ll try to keep the triggery things away.
OOC communication is love. I know I’ll be looking things for her to do, and everyone is invited to make her stay on Fandom as good as possible, not to mention make it bearable for the rest of the island. She’s not a bad person, all in all. She just needs someone to tell her that. Over and over and over again.
[Waiiiiiiiiiiit for the OCD up! Go for it!]
