Funny how that works

It's kind of strange that I check LJ almost every day and hardly ever update. Especially considering my life hasn't been that boring lately.

Well, it kinda has. I'm working full time in the lab, I enjoy it most of the time, in fact it's the kind of work I would do for free or at least less than I'm getting paid, so I shouldn't complain. However, it's similar to the stuff I've done in some of my classes, so I enjoy it, just not for 8 hours a day. I'm also going to go insane, I'm frequently listening to recordings of interviews but work either alone or with someone else who is processing sound so I listen to human interaction but don't get any. Normally my boss comes by every couple of days to check in and say hi, but she's been gone this week. Hmmm....

In an effort to not forget every word of Mandarin I know before the fall, I signed up for a conversation partner at the school of ESL at UW. The other reason would be that I am considering a masters in teaching ESL and doing that with my life for a few years, so I wanted to see what it would be like to teach some English informally. I'm enjoying myself so far, the school gave me two partners, both Taiwanese guys. One is a bit more advanced than the other, but I'm enjoying my time. In a slightly more vain effort, I'm trying to read a bit of Italian so I don't lose that, but it's a bit discouraging as there are so many words I don't know. I can understand all of the conversations that occur between characters, it's just the descriptive narratives that give me trouble, and I'm too lazy to look up 5-10 words on every page.

I built a new computer. I had never built one before this, so it was kind of fun and exciting. I love my new keyboard, actually part of why I'm updating is so that I can use it to actually type something of decent length out and not just my username and password on some website. So I guess this is my first LJ update from this machine. It kinda rocks, it wasn't cheap but not absurdly expensive either (about $1050 for everything, including OS, Office, monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse). I've been playing Crysis. It's awesome.

I went camping at some hot springs with the frat. It was a lot of fun. I don't know if I'll do much camping in the future - I'm just not that much of an outdoors person, but the Olympic Mountains:

are pretty friggin gorgeous. I must mention here that my mother demanded to know why I wasn't taking an AH-Vee, and I wanted to die.

But I'm tired now, so even though I have more to say, it has to wait. Ciaobye.
