solo vacation ideas

I'm open to places in the US and abroad, and I'm not against using a tour (although I've never used one and a glowing rec from someone who has would be super helpful!). I am, as I've reminded you all MANY times, a student so a week at that 7 start hotel in Dubai probably wouldn't work, even though I did like Dubai when I went there.
Fire away! Anyplace you have gone solo and enjoyed, a place you went to with other people but would have enjoyed solo, somewhere your boss/friend/roommate's significant other has gone ... those all work :-)
Oh, and I would be going in August, if that affects your recommendation at all!
