CHARACTER

NAME: Elijah Anders

SERIES: Original Character - A Devil's Prize

HISTORY: Triflumen is a place that can be heaven for the few, suffering for some, and hell for the rest. Humans and non-humans alike live here and everywhere signs of crossbreeding between the two races can be seen. All who are born here are tougher than others of their race born elsewhere, but they also seem to lose the light that others have as they unknowingly exchange parts of their souls for this toughness. Triflumen is the world’s wettest city with rain falling at least once a day even during the winter. The rain here is polluted to the point where is unfit for drinking without treatment. The city itself seems to be corrupted by some foul malice; religious centers built here are plagued by bad luck and death, thus they are rarely seen. Instead there are rumors of demons, devils, and strange creatures that seem to be made of the water itself.

It was in this city Elijah Anders was born during a heavy night time thunderstorm.

His parents, Griffon and Ophelia Anders, have from day one have loved and cared for their only son in a way that still surprises all who learn even a small part of their story. Ophelia runs her own drug cartel and Griffon is her (not to mention the city’s) best hit-man. Their loving nature, brilliant minds, and professional attitude towards their job has made Elijah a very strange kid.

He was home-schooled due to his parents' concern that he would be (and would place other children) in danger from his parents' enemies and as a result never developed many friends in his age group. He can, however, run mental laps around most children with a public school education thanks to his parents' own instruction. His parents do slightly regret their decision now because they feel that his lack of social interaction may have had a hand in his emotional under-development.

When Elijah was around ten his mother began to deal more heavily with races from other planes such as the Dark Lands and the Heavens. This lead to all Elijah and his parents learning Althayas, a common ground language that allows for trade. Elijah also began to learn of the drugs these races made or needed by asking questions. His father had already begun teaching him defensive combat to protect himself and began to instruct Elijah in his own work at Elijah’s (and Ophelia’s) urging. This training is the only reason why Elijah lives today; only a year later Elijah was kidnapped by a rival cartel and was supposed to be murdered as a warning to his parents. Elijah escaped by dislocating his thumb (to get out of his bonds) and crawled out a small basement window. When his captors caught up with him they caught a knife in their gut when he lured them into a trap. Elijah then ran home, much to the relief of his parents, and they moved to Tokyo for a time while Ophelia’s people "cleaned up the mess". After this event Elijah’s parents began to teach him even more about taking care of himself on the street and about street law; by the time they returned to the states when he was fourteen he was already helping his mother as a part-time dealer and even doing small jobs for his father.

Now at sixteen Elijah has become a silent but heard-of figure. On the streets most know of him has the “Queen’s Ace” referring to Ophelia’s street name of the "Mad Queen". Within the past couple months Elijah has begun to have strange nightmares of being trapped in great underground ocean only to be dragged down by something unseen. Each night he goes a little deeper, and each morning he feel drained and different somehow. He has begun to question his sanity and, at times, his humanity because he has begun to understand that he may not be as normal has he would like. If he wakes within the endless city he may just find it a welcomed change if the nightmares stop, or he may rebel against everything just for the chance to return to his parents.

TIMELINE: Elijah will be taken from early on in his timeline (around the third chapter of his story) before any major events beyond his nightmares takes place.
PERSONALITY: Elijah is like both ogres and onions (and not just because he can make you cry. Nor is he very ugly or smelly.) He has learned from personal experience that it is best to not reveal all the cards in your hand during the first round. Thus everyone who deals with him tends to only see his first or second layers: the quiet but kind teenager and the crass joker. The longer someone interacts with him the more likely he is to show a layer (or add another one if he doesn’t like him or her), but still most people (even friends) may never see his inner workings.

The moment someone tries to interact with him more than once in a blue moon he begins to “test” them: a poor joke here or simple question there to see what the person in question thinks and feels. More importantly, he learns just how "safe" he is around this person and can adjust his actions in response. This also allows him to see just how much he can let himself go around them, or if they can be of use to him (or he to them).

On the outer most layer Elijah is quiet, polite, kind or cold depending how one acts towards him or others that he has seen. Get him talking you’ll learn he likes to show himself as a joker; he does his best to lighten the mood (and force the other to let down his or her guard). He uses his jokes to gauge the nature of the person he is dealing with. After this he categorizes people in one of two ways depending on how they respond. People who are either suspiciously nice or too mean (think of Darth Vader) are treated to his cold side where he may interact with them only for personal gain or out of a need to keep an eye on them for an ass kicking later. If the person reacts anywhere in the middle of those two spectrums he may let them start to see how nice he really can be and some may even begin to see the brilliance of those gears turning around in his skull.

If he likes the person enough he or she will come to understand that Elijah sees the world in a moral manner that he calls "shades of gray" and that there are different levels of bad and good. As an example, killing a man can be terrible but it is less so if said man was a scum bag or did something to earn it. He has never personally seen “true black”(evil) or “ true white” (good) and thus has a difficult time understanding them. It also may become clear to the others that Elijah seems to have a weaker grasp on emotions than others his own age (or just people at large). The only one he seems to have no issue feeling is anger but his display of it is just as underdeveloped as the others. His closest friends come to learn that Elijah is quite the philosopher at heart and loves to study and examine everything he can. If someone ever reaches this point they can count on him to stand by them till the end; on the other hand if betrayal happens at this point they can count on not living long to enough to regret it.

If the person failed his test they will be kept at arm’s length even during the best times. Further actions that upset, anger, or give him reason to be concerned will lead the person in question to either no longer have contact with Elijah or a verbal warning of some nature. Enemies are ignored when it is possible, and when it is not then he prefers to "remove the player from the game". What that means for the person depends on their actions or worth. Harming someone close to Elijah or harming children, allies, or people he finds amusing will lead to worlds of pain at best.

ABILITIES/POWERS: Elijah is both physically fit and mentally capable. His favorite hobbies are Parkour and card or strategy games like chess. He also has a love for and some luck with card games. He is fast and agile on his feet and even faster when thinking on his feet. His parents made sure that Elijah could protect himself if need be and thus has been trained in armed and unarmed combat. He prefers blades because knives don’t need reloading but can use most publicly available firearms and has a preference for the 9mm.

His father trained him the art of murdering for money or getting his money back. His mother instructed him in ways or running a successful (but illegal) business. He has at least a fair knowledge of all common street drugs, and extensive knowledge of the stranger and more exotic ones that his mother’s people deal. The ability to read people is a gift Elijah possesses that he enjoys. He can speak at a beginner's level in Spanish, Japanese, and Russian and is fluent is Althayas (a planer trade language.)

Like all people born in Triflumen he has a strong stomach, no problem with heavy rainfall, doesn’t get sick often, is a capable swimmer, and is immune to many poisons. He seems to recover quickly from injuries and illness. Finally, he is very lucky, wields sarcasm like a blade, looks great with his blue hair, and can sleep just about anywhere.

SAMPLES

FIRST PERSON:
I would just like to say that this is sooooo not cool! It’s not even in the realm of cool! I want to know where I am, who the hell brought me here, and what in cosmos they slipped in my drink!

This room looks like an old folks' place, a vacation home, and a church had a fucked-up flipper-baby. Yak!

Soooo... this is a dream world? Or the dream world? I always imagined it to be all fluffy clouds and star-filled skies - or was that... what’s it called? Heaven? Still, I would never have guessed it looked like a city. Does it change at night when people dream? That might be cool to see, but not now; another time would be cool. I was working on something important, and I can’t help but think that whoever is controlling my body is going to fuck it up.

What the fuck! Why are the commons here? I mean they look like the commons but… but I can’t find Mom and Dad’s place! The building is there, and Jordan’s bar is on the first floor but the rest of the floors are empty. If this city were a person I’d say that they were one sick, twisted fuck. It kidnaps people and throws them into a new world! Not a new place but a world! It shows them hints of the other side to tease us, and this makes me worry about mom and dad. We have to wear a mask during the day; never mind that it can be an improvement for some people. Now I understand that we can’t even make noise at night! What if someone gets hurt or attacked? The only plus side I can see to that is that I won’t be woken up by overly vocal sex. To put a cherry on top of this crazy little mess, we're supposed to be happy about this? I don’t care if this is supposed to be a happy little world free of strife and woe. I want to go home. I will go home and this city can drown in the Profundus-vorago.

THIRD PERSON: (I’ve set this pre-Prom due to my lack of in game knowledge. If you would like me to re-write it I would be happy to do so. I know that my style of writing can bug people at times.)

The wrath of the sky had been unleashed upon Triflumen once more. Light ripped across the black canvas of clouds to be followed by a blast of sound that rattled windows and knocked dust from walls a moment later. The noise startled the sleeping figure of a teenager awake and he rolled off the bench he had been napping on out of reflex. He cursed aloud when his skinny form hit the gravel-covered rooftop and it took him a second to regain his memory of where he was and why.

Elijah had come up to the roof to escape the noise. Not the noise that often drifted up from Jordan’s bar on the first floor of the old brick building or the sounds of the people playing pool on the second floor. No, he had come to the roof so that he wouldn’t have to hear the grossest thing in the world; his parents having wild dirty sex.

The idea of sex sometimes made him nervous, and when he was younger it had even scared him. Years of hanging out with some of his parents' friends and even a few of his own older friends had helped him get over the fear to the point where he only viewed it with a distant confusion. That still didn’t change the fact that it was his parents having sex, and it sure as he didn’t change how loud his mom and dad got when in the midst of the act. The last thing Elijah wanted to fall asleep to was hearing their gods-be-damned dirty talk.

Elijah got up and ran back inside the building before the rain became too heavy. He ignored the door to his apartment (he could still hear them though the door) and went down the back stairs instead. If he couldn’t sleep on the roof he would just have to go down to one of the spare guest rooms in the basement. Sure the sounds of the bar overhead drifted down but still it wasn’t the sounds of sex.

ORIGINAL CHARACTER QUESTION: His first reaction would be to flip out slightly (but calmly) and demand to know where he was, how he got there, who kidnapped him, what they wanted, and what they drugged him with. Once he learned that his life was in no apparent danger and that this place wasn’t trying to use him to hurt his parents he would pretend to relax. Just like he would pretend to follow the rules. In reality he would do his anything in his power to try and return home, and give the city as much trouble as he can get away with.
