great way to start the morning

Oh, looky, one of my idiot coworkers finally got the forward that "Target is French and hates veterans1!zomg!!" And naturally forwarded it to everyone on his contact list. This time I didn't reply to everyone on the email, just to the sender, with the Snopes detractions: http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/target.asp My mother screeched about this, too, and I had to point this out to her, and yet she STILL is leery of Target. WTF is with people who'll believe any poorly written misspelled email that comes their way?

Yet again I'm so angry I'm almost shaking with it. Casual stupidity pisses me off more than most anything. It's so EASY to double check these emails. It takes TWO SECONDS to put some thought into examinining that precious red font and thinking whether what it says makes any goddamn sense. But people can't bother with that, can they! AARGH.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother. Why not just step aside and let the tidal wave of idiocy swamp us all? But I can't. I can't just give up without trying to fight or educate people. I've never felt the calling to be a teacher, but I always wanted to be someone like Carl Sagan, who made the masses give a damn and actually LEARN something.

It's such a pity no one like him has stepped forward, whether it be to speak up for evolution or about the evils of talking points or even something as simple as personal responsibility. Though it saddens me that people need to be TOLD these things. I have no religion, but I do have my own damn moral compass, my own sense of responsibility that tells me to actually look at the world around me and to constantly question. It's not hard! Why is it so few people have the same skills?!

There must be somehow that I can actually make some kind of impact this way. For now, I'll just try to do what I can, in the lives of the people around me. Even if sometimes it's tempting to just throttle them.

musings, work
