Domestic goddess I am not.

Yet I'm still unreasonably proud of myself.

Baaaasically, I'm being a cheap bastard and having my mom help me with laundry tomorrow. She'll be in town, and she called up and said, "Bea, do you want to go with me to the laundromat?" To which my enthusiastic response was "Yes!"

I can't tell if you're being antagonistic or not, so I'll just say this:

I was in no way implying that growing tomatoes will make anyone more manly, or that not growing them has the opposite effect. I was merely drawing a parallel between my own feelings and that of the stereotypical "olden days" male/female archetypes. I washed something by hand, it made me feel resourceful. Someone who grows a tomato from a seedling may also feel resourceful.

In today's society, the idea that everything should be fast and convenient is perpetuated everywhere. It's part of our zeitgeist. We live in the age of the twenty-jean-load washer/dryer combo and the year-round produce aisle at the local grocery. In an age of automated convenience, we have no need to break out a washing-board and lye soap or till a half-acre for a garden. Still, small actions like washing in a sink or tending a patio plant can remind us of the people we used to be, the human beings who would do so much more than this just to survive.

So maybe I should clarify. I meant no gender-bias, no increased manhood or womanhood. I only meant that, in a very stupid and simple way, washing a pair of underwear in the sink made me stop and appreciate how far humankind has come.

Also, that's an awesome site. I want some baby watermelon plants for my garden this year! My silly farm dog ate my started-from-seed ones last summer.

Actually I was being a bit silly and playing off of your words.

You are absolutely correct in the fact that manual labor does bring about satisfaction, especially when you get to eat the fruits of your labor! Life is often missed because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. Enjoy life to day and share a smile with a stranger.

Thanks for checking out my site!
