I'm sure Wii sports is a good party game when you're high but you'll have a hard time convincing me its anything other than a bare-bones sports sim that lacks depth. It just seems a little half-assed. They could have made it twice as good and still given it away free with the console.
Now, I keep hearing all this crap about Nintendo not competing with Sony and Microsoft. Well like it or not, they have no choice. The non-gamer market is a shallow pit at past and there are only so many people that are going to be pulled in by the cheap price tag and flashy controller before the well runs dry and even those who've bought one, how long before its picking up dust in the corner? Non-gamers don't keep up to date on the latest releases and whats worth buying or not. I think that after picking up the third dud of the last few months, most of them will hang up their wiimote, take the console out back and put it out of its misery so the kids don't have to watch it suffer.(Figuratively speaking of course) As for the actual gamers, you know as well as I do that they're a picky breed. Most won't be able to afford multiple consoles and be even less capable to keep them updated with good games. Good games sell consoles. Not "Wow, you COULD use the wiimote to___" or "wouldn't a wii version of ____ be so cool" No one in the right mind is going to buy a console based on "what ifs"
You mention the virtual console. I'd like you to meet my friend, Emulation. Every single console you mentioned (Yes, including the N64) can be downloaded and provided with countless free roms. Yeah, its illegal but when has that ever mattered? The 360 has the same thing with retro titles and self-made titles. I won't pretend that they're in the league of the big Nintendo classics but its essentially the same service as the Wii virtual console, with the addition of new games. The channels thing, yeah it seems like a nice enough feature. If um, you don't have the internet. Yeah, I get the whole "Super special nintendo community!!!" feel but still, all it warrants is a meh.
Now, onto the line-up. You mention 5 titles with "the promise" of another 2. Granted, i'm sure a few more will pop up out of the woodwork but 10 quality titles out of 100 is piss-poor on Nintendos part. I'm sure i'm not the only one that doesn't want to sift through mounds of shit in order to find some whole pieces of corn. Lets take a look at the 360. Released little over a year ago and I can name something around the region of 30 quality titles with at least 10 more in the next 6 months. Now when I say quality I don't mean genre-breaking, world-changing, "Hey maw, the dams gawn burst!" titles. I'm talking about games that are enjoyable, original for the most part and have some lasting appeal. I haven't carefully calculated the ratio between good and bad titles but it doesn't take a genius to look at the figures and be able to tell that overall, this is very good.
I think Nintendos main problem is that they're really the only ones who understand the potential of their new console. Super mario, Smash brothers, Zelda, mario kart, metroid. Notice a similarity? All Nintendo. While i'm sure thats a fan-boys dream, its a little more concerning to the rest of us. Every console has the support of 3rd party developers but the ones supporting Nintendo seem to be struggling much more than the ones supporting our good friends at Microsoft and Sony. They've brough along this great "innovation" (again, I use the term loosely) and no-one else seems to have any ideas of what to do with it.
My opinion is based on previous research and close examination of the pros and cons of the console. I kept an open mind when playing but in the short time I had with it, nothing changed the fact that I think as a console, it lacks depth.

It is very hard to argue with any of this as it is all based on fact and your personal opinion.
The way I see it...my massive rant was a more positive look at the wii while yours was a negative one. One could do the same thing with the 360 and the ps3 each console has it's pros and cons and in my opinion the wii's obvious cons are outweighed by how enjoyable playing it is. However that is again opinion.
There really isn't a whole lot more to say as both of us have laid down pretty much all the facts, our own opinions and how we believe the general public will in the long term respond to the console. As i said before...I hope upon playing it further you change your mind about the wii but I understand that you more than likely won't until there are better quality games.
