Went to Cali last week, to prep and investigate for moving all of our stored gear from my parents' and our freshly inherited storage unit. Also made sure the storage people had all the paperwork they needed to authenticate us, and my permission slip to touch...and 3 or 4 pounds of every key I found in our Hell summer house...hoping I had the one that opened the Box....
And I was so pleased with myself I'd noticed a likely key that turned out to be the right key, that even though the lock had almost rusted frozen, I was still preening when I managed to get the door open....and boy did that evaporate in the afternoon sun. It's only, say, a room-sized space, but worse than any room in the summer house was; and this has taken us by surprise...given that it was loaded by professionals, paid for the purpose.
I dug in towards the center, since it was a fact-finding mission - and an opportunity to sell off the vinyl collection, but sadly I overslept and was too late to do that and lacked a plan B for doing so (dammit), though I did find it, which we had feared I wouldn't - and managed to take a lot of pictures standing on an antique singer case (why yes it *is* inside, and looks to be in good condition, it's for sale!). Unfortunately...the other things we were hoping to fish out...I didn't see hide nor hair of, and everything I opened? Not labeled correctly. Once again, must open and sort through every box to find what we want, with no idea where those things might be. Sommat worse, five years of dust! and badly packed boxen, badly loaded storage unit, loose articles, improperly packed things, things that shouldn't have been packed (a can of cat food? really?), and way too much evidence of vermin visitations.
On the bright side, no evidence of vermin nesting or chewing! I got the lock open!
And that's sort of where the win ends and the fail begins.
I don't know how to dispose of the contents, am not even sure at this point that what we are looking for is in there...somewhere....and really, really want to give in to this totally unproductive urge I've been biting back until my teeth ache.
Nothing for it, have to fix it. I see much dental work in my future.
