by Ernest Gaines
A well-to-do white Cajun man is shot down in cold blood. The sheriff believes he knows which of the local colored did it, but he can't prove it because eighteen different black man arrived at the scene first. Each of them has a shotgun, claims to have committed the murder, and vows to a riot should an arrest be made.
A nice, quick read. A clever little book about race relations from an American master.
Highly recommended.
