Nora tells me I got second place in the Swarthmore poetry contest. YAY! (Though I haven't seen anything in writing yet)
I did not, however, get the junior summer stipend for creative writing, which would have let me relax about my summer plans SO much more. Those of you I've talked to about this know how much I wanted that stipend. I feel my reasons are justified.
Nonetheless, the prize went to a poet I know who writes absolutely magnificent poems. She deserves it, though I kind of want to know what her proposed project was. Nat Anderson wrote me an email explaining that I was a "very strong contender" (think she sent an email like that to most who submitted?). Once again, it's like that job I didn't get at Maple Street bookstore. Thanks for telling me you like me, but it 's not quite the same if I don't get any results (i.e. an income). I guess they just don't want their poets to throw up their hands in despair, say "no one understands me!" and throw themselves and all their notebooks into a volcano. There's always that one person who's that much more qualified for the job or writes the right kind of poems. I guess now I have to *actually* work during the summer, probably doing a boring office job I won't enjoy that much.
(Edit: Okay, I'm over it now.)
But hey, I surely cannot complain. I just got money for writing poetry. Not many people can say that. WOOT!
