Big Cavity, Doctor Who, dying RPG store, Discordians are often buttheads

So, from what I hear, liking Love and Monsters may make me the object of disdain on the part of other Whovians. So... I quite liked it. Actually my favorite one of the second season thus far. The fact that it starred Shirley Henderson, who is, like, some kind of minor Nerd Love Goddess, did not hurt in the least.

Also, the Impossible Planet and ( Read more... )

I'm rather of mixed emotions myself for J&F. Every other time I go there I end up shaking my head. It's been my source for Knights of the Dinner Table for at least four years, but each time I go in to pick it up I'm told, "Well, its on back order," or "It'll be in next week," or "Tomorrow for sure!" and then it wouldn't be in until a month or so later, then two issues would be there for me ( ... )

Sigh. Yeah, Doc Mystery's story is often all too true.

Yeah. The owner brought much of his woe upon himself, and now is in a spot where he can't afford to ditch his old stock, can't afford to buy new stock...

One of the sure signs of poverty in Canada is a person with several missing teeth - they pay to have bad teeth pulled in extremis because they can't afford checkups. If you own a store, and your income is so bad that you can't afford preventative maintence on your teeth, or insurance to cover dental bills, something is very wrong.

The owner of J&F is missing all his upper front teeth. They may have been knocked out in an accident, but I have a sneaking suspicion he just didn't have the money for a dentist.

If he was wise, he'd try and move some of this stuff on ebay; some of the models in particular are quite valuable, and he would get a few bucks for the gaming stuff. Or talk to Rose at Bayshore about running a booth at the next con and call it "Old School Games!". Or close down the store proper, and rent space from a fleamarket somewhere. Or...I could go on and on ( ... )

Oh, the store IS annoying, even to me. I picked up a book, and a sign fell on my head. There were broken bits of desk and shelving all in the aisles, with no sign of them being put away.

And... well, I guess in the end I would not have bought anything if he didn't have anything I did want to buy. Pity moved me from "I don't need this book, even though I kinda want it," to "Buying these RPG manuals is an act of charity!"

Do they even say "Jesus" on that show, come to think of it?

Agreed about many Discordians (it often seems to be used as an excuse to be an particularly annoying jackass) and about Love and Monsters, definitely a very good episode, although I thought Random Shoes for Torchwood (which was shockingly, and very deliberately similar) was even better (and was one of the three Torchwood episodes better than anything I've seen on any geeky show since the very best Buffy eps (the other two Torchwood eps being They Keep Killing Suzie & Out of Time. I love new Dr. Who (especially the entire Eccleston season after episode 5), and much of Torchwood is fairly dodgy (especially the ending), but those 3 episodes were amazing. As for Tenant's Dr., I don't like his as well as 9, but Love and Monsters & School Reunion were amazing, and many others were quite good.

I've not seen any Torchwood yet - I'm hearing mixed reports about it.

I'm not sure if it's Tennant's portrayal, or the scripts, but almost anytime he starts gushing about how amazing humanity is, my eyes start glazing over.

Preach it! Except when he hugged the captain in THE SATAN PIT*- I thought the hug was endearing.

I remember now, that the last time we talked I wanted to say something about how my primary memory of THE SATAN PIT* was that it was the episode before one that I had liked, but I couldn't remember which one it was that I was thinking of - and now I remember, it was Love and Monsters! So yeah - I'm with you...

*(I'm sorry, I can't write it without all caps, it's a pathology)
