1) Alas, we lost another. I'm seeing reported that Octavia Butler died yesterday.
2) Been reading this weekend:
Colors of Chaos (reread) - Modesitt
Golden Hills of Westria - Paxson
Vampire Hunter D #3 - Kikuchi
Children of Hamelin - Spinrad
Black Lodge - Weinberg
Armageddon Box - Weinberg
Still enjoy the Modesitt, and it caps a recent set of rereads of the Recluce books.
New Westria book was more than a disappointment, as I have a great fondness for the original two books in the sequences (Timescape books, the both of them...for those of you who know me, I'm sure you know why I mention it.)
VHD book was enjoyable, and I'm greatly enjoying finally getting a chance to read this. This one was the basis for the execrable Bloodlust film, and infinitely better. I still wish to see a proper history of the Frontier, though....
Children of Hamelin was great fun. Spinrad at his finest, although like BJB, it suffers at the ending. Plus, Brustein was such a .....mundane? villian. As always I enjoy Spinrad's walks on the wild side....
I'm still really looking for a match to Void Captain's Tale, but this one was definitely fun.
The two Weinberg books are guilty pleasures. Black Lodge reads like a riff of his White Wolf vampire books, complete with inadequate usage of the Sheddim, and a clone of Dirk McCain, but I admit to liking his detectives, and I do think he's a reasonable storyteller. So while they might be trash, they are *fun* trash. Armageddon Box was weaker than Black Lodge, but featured Nazis and crazed church heretics, so wasn't that bad ;-) I don't have the first book in that sequence (Devil's Auction), but I'm going to have to pursue it, I think.
