Olympic Nausea

I'm doing what might be called "boycotting" the Olympics. I'm not watching it, and letting people know why. I've very little idea about who's leading, though I'm sure it will remind us of the USA-USSR showdowns of old, only with a different communist nation of similar moral decrepitude. I do know Finland got a gold medal. Ain't that cute?

I'm not big on China either, which is why I haven't been watching either (but I'm secretly keeping track of our medals on iGoogle).

My reasons are a bit different - I am appalled that our economy has effectively been bought by China. There is no reason that every time I go out to buy something, I can't find a version of the product that isn't made in China (with the exception of food, but that's another can of worms entirely). Steve and I are both extremely anti-Walmart, and I think this is just bleed over from that.

I know that things have changed in China in recent years, but talking with some of my students has led me to believe that they haven't changed that much. It might just be that I am incapable of understanding the culture as a Westerner, but the human rights violations that occur bother the shit out of me. I simply can't believe that the Olympic committee would decide to put the games in a country where those things occur, no matter how much economic power they wield.

Have you seen the latest news about the opening ceremonies? Besides the fact that some of the fireworks were pre-recorded and others were digital, the girl who "sang" the opening anthem was lip-syncing because the girl who actually sang wasn't attractive enough. Now, I know that they could have handled the last a bit differently - they should have acted like us and just found a pretty girl who could carry a tune. Sheesh. ;)

Anyway, I just wanted to say that, yeah, I don't like that they're held in China either.
