Taylor loved his mother. He knew that everything she did was for him, and he truly appreciated that. She sacrificed a lot just to ensure that he had everything he needed to be healthy and happy. But he often wondered about her own happiness. He knew she missed his dad sometimes, missed having someone to talk to, to hold her, to look out for her and put her first.
When John burst into their lives, for a moment he wondered if he could make his mother happy. She smiled more, seemed to have a little bit of a spring in her step, and she was often deep in thought, almost distracted, which was unusual.
One night, he watched them from his bedroom window. They were having a heated conversation on the front step, that he could tell. His mom reached out, put her hand on John’s arm, and he stilled, his eyes closing and his jaw twitching. Taylor couldn’t hear what they were saying, but he could read their body language loud and clear when his mom cupped John’s face and leaned in to kiss him.
Taylor wasn’t surprised. He could tell his mom really liked John, even though she never said a word about it. He knew John had a past, just what exactly, he’d never been told. He also knew that he trusted the man. He moved away from the window and crawled into bed, daring to think about what it would be like to be a family again.
