When he showed up at her apartment, he was a sorry sight. He was bleeding from a head wound and numerous scratches on his face, clutching his left shoulder, and nursing some bloody knuckles. It had been months since she’d seen him last, and she always wondered where he was, how he was doing. Judging by his sudden appearance at her door, not well.
Megan Tillman helped him inside, didn’t ask questions, just guided him to her sofa where he collapsed with a muffled groan. She grabbed her first aid kit, a bottle of water and some pain pills. He refused the pills, but took the water, fumbling with the cap with his good hand. She helped him and he gulped down half the bottle. She got him out of his overcoat, suit jacket, and his dress shirt, instantly saw that his shoulder was dislocated.
She knew there was no way he would go to the ER, which was why he was here. Without a word, she went to work, rotating his arm and shoulder, slowly coaxing it back into place. He gave a sigh of relief and leaned back while she took care of his cuts and scrapes.
Even battered and bruised, he still looked...nice. Yes, she decided, nice was a good word to describe him. Strong was another good word. And perhaps, maybe even, attractive. She felt a blush creep up her neck as she ran an antiseptic wipe across a cut on his cheekbone.
He had saved her life, that was all. She owed him more than she could ever repay him, so she didn’t think it was wise to develop a school girl crush on him. He seemed to know what she was thinking, judging by his crooked grin. She shook her head and continued bandaging him up.
The entire time he’d been at her apartment, he hadn’t spoken, except a soft word of thanks as he squeezed her hand and then disappeared into the night.
With a sigh she closed her door and wondered if she would see him again.
