OA anyone?

I was wondering if anyone has ever been to OA (Overeaters Anonymous)? And if so, what was your experience, was it helpful?  I'm trying to figure out if I should be involved with OA. My therapist doesn't think it's a the group for me right now because they are so focused on losing weight and i'm just getting out of treatment for bulimia. I go to ( Read more... )

I used to live in CA. Oh, so many years ago :-).

Way back in 1987 my girlfriend (now wife) and I moved from Santa Rosa CA to Cambridge MA. We were eating buddies, big time. She found OA and suggested (ordered?) me to go too. We both picked up the popular food plan of the day and lost TONS of weight very quickly. I did a diet. I didn't change my relationship with food. So, while I lost the weight, I left OA after I hit my goal. Good bye. I'm cured. Have fun!

Over the next 14-15 years, I put on all the weight I lost plus a bonus and, truly desperate and willing to do what I was told, I came back. I was at least 306 pounds. At my first meeting back, in 2002, I got a sponsor and a food plan (same as 14 years earlier) and started to lose weight. I had some set backs but by November (after an awful halloween), I had sort of a real mind shift. I came to really accept, finally, that I really had a deadly problem and I started to work the program for real. The program is the 12 Steps of OA.

Today, OA is a big part of my life. I sponsor lots of people. I go to 3 meetings a week. I do service at meetings and other levels. My whole attitude has changed. I used to be super negative about everyone else. Now, I mind my own business. I keep my corner of the sandbox clean. If you invite me to play in your part of the sandbox, I leave it as neat as I found it.

I like most OA meetings because I accept them as they are. Some I never go back to :-). OA suggests you try 6 meetings before you make up yor mind. Worked for me.

Meeting lists are online here: http://www.oa.org/all_about_meetings.htm
