Riddle 023: When in Drone

[A: Action - Mayfield High School

Well, class, have you been enjoying your sessions with your droned Ethics teacher, Mr. Nigma? Because it looks as though he's in the middle of yet another of his cheerful drone-y lectures.]

You see, kids? Life sure is grand here in Mayfield. Even if you're down or discouraged about schoolwork, or girls, or ( Read more... )

it's complicated, where my gothamites at?, droning sucks, where my villains at

Is that what happened to you? I thought you were dead.

[L's flat tone doesn't seem to leave room for the appropriate amount of gravity--for him to sound as if Edward's death would have been more disappointing than running out of cake.]

I appreciate the concern.

It's been difficult to tell who did and didn't make it, or, if they were droned, whether or not they would ever come back.

Do you remember anything of the past few weeks?

Brief snippets, here and there, of doing yardwork. And interactions with---

[That's right, he'd met Pam while he was droned, hadn't he?]

---certain people. Nothing terribly significant.

"Certain people"?

[Maybe he sounds a little bit more interested.]

An old friend from back home. She's been brought here as well, it would seem.

Mm. Does that happen often? How were you aware that it was her?

[The only one of his "old friends from home" that he's aware of so far in Mayfield is someone who should be dead. There may be others; it's impossible to say, without more exposure than he wants, although he hasn't seen any familiar faces. All he can hope for is to get out before more enemies arrive.]

Every so often---she'd been droned several months back, though it appears she's back to normal once again. I know there are others who have likewise met companions from home. Enemies, as well.

It must be very unfortunate to be in that kind of situation. Assuming that someone has an enemy, it seems like your options for dealing with the issue are greatly reduced here.

Indeed.

[Just imagine if Batman showed up in Mayfield. Or Ra's al Ghul.]

There's a question that's been burning at the back of my mind ever since we first began our little game of phone tag. Just when do I get to meet you? I can only be kept in suspense for so long.

This... is suspense?

I assure you, I'm very dull. Although I have to admit that, when you're new in town, it's always helpful to make friends.

[He believes nothing of the sort, but his tone is convincing.]

[Friends. If that's even possible for Edward, anyway.]

For that matter, you know my name, yet I know almost nothing about you, friend.
