Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani?

At the end of the day, alone,
while the stars mill about dead in the sky,
and the sun has abandoned the earth,
there is a moment, a kind of exhaustion,
in which hearts beat much harder,
like the stifled, nearly silenced scream
of the last voice on earth.
And, for several sharp, painful moments,
there are no gods.
