It seems there was a post this morning on Tumblr warning people not to use the tagging system because members of 4chan have invaded the site and have been posting pornographic and violent images under a lot of popular tags, including feminism and LBGT-related ones, not to mention various popular fandoms (SuperWhoLock and Avengers, to be sure, but also at least two anime - Free and Attack on Titan). This explains why I found a hardcore porn gif in the GazettE tag one or two days ago - I thought it was the professional Ruki-hating troll who shows up from time to time. (Apparently, they're hitting the most popular tags for each kind of fandom, so if they went looking for "most popular J-rock bands on Tumblr," they probably came up with "Dir En Grey and GazettE.")
Further investigation reveals that this seems to be the latest salvo in a 4chan vs. Tumblr war that has gone on almost as long as Tumblr has existed. It seems what prompted this particular attack was some Tumblr users loudly announced they were going to take 4chan down for their racism. So 4chan counterattacked - hitting people who had NOTHING to do with the announced attack.
This sucks on MANY levels, because a lot of people use that tagging system for promotion - people with a fanart or fanfic seeking an audience, for example, or maintainers of non-Tumblr blogs and web sites looking for readers. (I help an alliance of geek sites out with their social media - there's a couple of gaming sites, a comic book one, an anime review site, a B-movie/genre TV site. They rely VERY heavily on tags to get attention for their sites.) Not to mention that it affects the casual fan browsing for info/photos on a new interest, or someone that just wants to see posts made about a particular event (for instance, the premiere of Sailor Moon Crystal). Heck, it affects the general fandom community on Tumblr - who wants to wade through billions of posts about things that are of no interest to them just to find one picture of their favorite J-rock boys?
So, yeah, just a bit annoyed. both for that site alliance I work with and for myself. I wanted to see those Sailor Moon Crystal posts! And I wanted to look at the tag for D=OUT, since I'd never paid attention to them until I saw Kouki's picture in jrockspam's 10 Sexiest Men in J-Rock list. (Dammit, PSC, stop signing bands with vocalists who look like they should be JGV stars!) Hopefully, they get this straightened out pretty damn fast. (Or how about booting 4chan off the Internet? Yeah, like that's going to happen . . .)
