I just got off the phone with my mom. Most of the conversation was good but I did spend the last five minutes yelling at her (not screaming-mad yelling but 'you have been bad, go to your room!' yelling).
You see, my parents live in Florida -- as in, a battleground state with 27 electoral votes. However, they will not be able to vote because they are not US citizens. They are green card carrying Swedish citizens who have lived here since the late 60s (in my father's case, he's lived here since the 40s).
It used to be that in order to become US citizens, they would have had to give up their Swedish citizenship. Things changed years ago though, allowing for dual citizenship. I've gotten on them mildly about this before but they were both so busy with work that the lack of time seemed like a reasonable excuse. My dad is still working (from home) full-time for another year or two but my mom is retired. She spends her days going to line dancing classes, golfing and enjoying Disney World. I've told her that she has no excuse to put it off any longer. She brushes me off with 'Oh, I am so bad at taking tests!' and little jokes like 'If I fail, they will probably deport me!'
I am having none of it! I scolded her harshly and told her that I would continue to nag her about this. My parents have missed their chance to vote in this election but it is important that they become voting citizens as soon as possible.
If you are registered, make sure you vote. If aren't registered but are old enough,
get registerd and vote. No matter who you support, what your political positions are, whether it's a presidential election or local, voting is important.
