Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that I got an XO (the
One Laptop Per Child) laptop for Christmas this year, through their
Give One, Get One program. When I first heard about these things, I WANTED ONE, but it looked like short of going to a third world country and successfully passing off as a disadvantaged child, I was going to have no chance at it. Then they started the program, I knew what I wanted for christmas, and now I have an awesome new toy that also helps someone.
And awesome is the word. It's crazy cute, fantastically well-designed -- seriously, if, for some reason, you have $400 to blow (or can talk someone else into blowing it for you), I'd recommend it.
Well, recently,
Intel backed out of the project. To woo Intel to the table, OLPC had to agree to make laptops with their processors, rather than the vastly superior AMD, but Intel brought a big name to the table, so I guess they thought it was worth it. Intel also wanted to moonlight with other (less charitable, more poorly designed) cheap laptop programs. OLPC asked them not to. Intel took their ball and went home.
FUCK YOU, Intel, you greedy fucking bastards! You don't even deserve to be well known, except as people who make TERRIBLE FUCKING PROCESSORS. You know why the guys at MIT used AMD? BECAUSE THEY'RE BETTER. We're ALL better off without you.
In other news, they said we were getting a storm, and I was like: "Dude, it's rain. Okay, first big rain of the season, but why is it on CNN? Have you nothing better to talk about?" (Speaking of CNN: We get it. Britney's fucked up. Now she's in the hospital. SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT THIS, IT IS NOT NEWS! If a news site would open up that had in its mission statement or somewhere that it swore never to cover stupid human interest stories, stories of personal tragedy, stupid crime, recreational outrage, or celebrity screwups, I would read it exclusively.) But as it turns out, they weren't fucking kidding. It is POURING here, and has been pouring unabated for almost two hours at least. (I was sleeping before that.) I'm totally not looking forward to driving to work today. And work itself -- it's gonna be dead. Utterly dead. So boring. And then driving home -- ugh.
