The steps taken since those words held uncertainty, and if the day had gone any differently, Nigredo might have kept silent altogether on a meeting. Or waited for a better day to seek his brother out. As it was, he would be in trouble for leaving so late, for tossing aside curfew on behalf of someone no one approved of ( ... )

The last rays had faded long before, and Albedo wondered about time in that instant, wondered about waiting, and hoping for nothing. And Albedo thought, and dismissed, his punishment for not returning. Nothing dealt could be worse that what had already happened. Nothing mattered. Not anymore ( ... )

The voiceless words served as relief while another kind of dread formed at the base of his spine. His eyes gazed at the scenery, searching for the landmark Albedo mentioned. He found them--rocks in distance--and for once, without the hesitation, Nigredo moved forward. His breath came out in audible intervals; whether from exhaustion or something else, he did not know.

He reached the rocks and circled around them, a hand trailing against stone. It took a moment for the boy to recognize the pale hair, but he managed to pause within arm's length of the other boy. Albedo appeared off, but that was understandable.

Nigredo bowed his head. "I'm sorry I'm late," he muttered.
