Day 27: This Month, In Great Detail
I devoted a considerable portion of this month to continuing my recovery from my kidney donation in December. As a result, I spent most of my time during the first two weeks at home bundled up under an electric blanket and with cats on top of me. During this time I was also able to relax in the critter room and let Risu and Pierogi take names in my sweatshirt. I started easing back into my "normal" life starting on the 2nd. Despite the -10°F air temperature, I wrapped myself in multiple layers of clothing & headed over to Minneapolis to take photos of Zenon Dance School's open house. I have plenty of shots of their student performances and they wanted to complement those with pictures of their classes. I knew most of the instructors and many of the dancers, and I met a dancer I hadn't seen in 4 years! That was a nice surprise to reconnect with her. After the shoot I went to St. Kate's for my first basketball game of the season. I had missed the home game in December because it was the day after my donation.
It was at that moment that I decided to work at only St. Kate's games this season. This freed up two days each week.
I started going out to theater again. First was Oklahoma at Chanhassen Dinner Theater. This was a "date" with the artistic director of a production company for whom I took photos last year. I used quotes because she's married and we were clearly not on a real date but that's what she called it. Since then I attended about 10 other productions and have plans to see a few more this month.
This month I started studying my script in earnest. Because I am a sooper-genius, I figured out a great solution to the problem of the script being in a glued-back book. (It's difficult to hold open and/or write in because of the spine.) I took the book to document services and had them cut the spine then punch holes and put a spiral binder on. It worked wonderfully.
I went back to work, first for a half day and then for a short (4-day) week. This went fine as long as I remembered to stand up and stretch every now and then and to take the stairs slowly. I got tired the first time I bolted up 3 flights.
I continue to feed the squirrels and birds on my porch. It's been delightful watching the little red squirrel coexist with the grays, and I've enjoyed watching the bright red flash of the visiting cardinals. The campus squirrels remembered me and came to me when I called out to them. During this time of year, I typically don't see them often because they're in their nests when I'm outside. If the weather is relatively nice, I'll go outside instead of walking through buildings during the day and hope that the squirrels are out and about.
I like trying new restaurants and have been to two this month: M & S Grill (a steakhouse) and Sambuza Grill (Somalian food.) I still patronize my favorite local restaurants of course. Every so often I like to try something different.
