First a reminder - the quarterfinal poll of my
Brit Band Battle will be open until tomorrow night.
I've been miserable the last two days. I started feeling wonky on Sunday morning but I had no specific symptoms. In the evening I went to the BLB to watch "Auntie Lisa" and my throat started feeling sore there. At the time I attributed it to dry air. Yesterday was both Groundhog Day and Ballerina Day. Some friends had planned an Intergalactic Tutu Day party for last night. On Sunday I bought 24 yards of net with which to make a tutu for myself. By the time I got home from the BLB, I felt wiped out and went to bed. Monday started out ok but got progressively worse. By the time I left work, my throat was very sore and I felt like my head was trapped in pudding but not the good kind that I would enjoy. I quickly met up with
projectnewt after work to buy one of her fabulous artworks and then went directly home. Crash time. I had no energy to sew and obviously I wasn't going out to the Tutu day party.
I woke up this morning at 7:30 as usual and was totally out of it and barely able to speak. I quickly fed the critters, called work and then went back to bed. Next thing I knew it was 2:30pm. Aside from the short break at 7:30, I had slept for around 16 hours. I was feeling a little better so I went in to visit Risu. I don't like it when I can't spend any time with him in the morning. I discovered something interesting - I think that Buffy and Willow have finally mellowed out about Risu! When I went into the room, Risu was sitting on the corner of the table just outside of the degu condo, and neither degu was spazzing. They used to squeak and bat at Risu when he got near. I hope they've got some sort of detente worked out.
After visiting the critters, I made some tea and have been drinking some continuously throughout the day. My throat's soreness is now a dull ache and my head feels foggy instead of pudding-y. I'd say that's improvement.
I hate the feeling of helplessness and uselessness when I'm sick. My cats, however, didn't seem to mind. They spent the whole day on or near me.
Saturday night I went to see Faust at the MN Opera. It was lovely. The singer who played Mephistopheles stole the show. He was magnificent. His facial expressions and movements were delightful. In homage to him, I wore all black and made a cravat out of black burnout fabric. Originally I wanted to use black lace but was unable to find any. Instead I found something better. This fabric had skulls, bats and spiders in the burnout pattern! They were subtle so you couldn't really tell what they were unless you looked closely. This was an apt underworld cravat. Note to the MN Opera: just because you can fly someone around on stage doesn't mean that you should. I felt that the final scene of the opera lost all its power when they flew the angel around on stage. When she first appeared, the image was striking - a bright white angel descending at center stage wielding a shiny sword. Mephistopheles, his minions (I want some of my own, dammit) and Faust cowered at stage left, Marguerite was at stage right reaching out to the angel. Then the flew the angel over to stage left with no visible change in demeanor of the people there. They were already cowering. What else could they do? They kept moving the angel back and forth and it looked cheesy. There's power in stillness; the most powerful person on the stage does NOT have to move.
Over the past several weeks, I've tried out several new songs at karaoke. The keepers include Hallelujah (Rufus Wainwright), Love Song (The Cure), Life During Wartime (Talking Heads), Sex Farm (Spinal Tap), Stray Cat Strut (Stray Cats), and That's Amore (Dean Martin). Ones that didn't work or aren't particularly good songs for karaoke were Year of the Cat (Al Stewart), Policy of Truth (Depeche Mode) & Red Barchetta (Rush.) Last Friday I went to karaoke at 10pm after seeing The Ice Fishing Play at Theater in the Round and managed to sing 5 songs by 11pm! Things got crowded thereafter so I did only a few more.
Barring a relapse, I've got an event-filled week ahead. I plan to go to the St. Kate's vs. UST game on Wednesday then to a photoshoot for Cromulent. Thursday I'm planning to see Open Eye's "The Snowman" and then "Ka-Baam!" Saturday is more basketball then off to Theater Unbound's 24 hour play festival. After a photoshoot for Young Dance on Sunday, I'm going to the final performance of
Masterworks: The MOBA Plays. Come check it out at 7pm. It's my public directing debut.
